December-January is the peak season in South Africa. School holidays in South Africa change annually, but are usually two weeks in April, one month in/around July, one month in/around September and two months in December and January.

Wild flowers

The best time for viewing the wild flowers in the Northern and Western cape is between mid-August and mid-September.

Observing wildlife

In June most of the vegetation and water at the waterholes are gone, which makes it easier to spot wildlife. November is the start of the calving season for most animals. The best time for whale watching (South Coast or the coast of KwaZulu-Natal) is between August and November.
