Bloemfontein
Bloemfontein is the provincial capital of Free State.
J.R.R. Tolkien was born here in 1892. The city is relatively safe, compared to other cities in South Africa. Visit the National Museum, Queens Fort, National War Museum or Freshford House Museum.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Beautiful sandstone cliffs, giving off a golden glow at the end of the afternoon, guard the west entrance of this park. There are no large carnivores here, so the park is very suitable for walking excursions. In the wintertime it can be quite cold, with snowfall and temperatures below zero.
