Information about Lesotho

Lesotho, which is surrounded by South Africa, is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. The executive power is in the hands of the council of ministers and the traditional Chiefs. The legislature rests at the two-chamber parliament. The king (Letsie III), who is Head of State, also has a lot of influence. The capital of Lesotho is Maseru. The country has approximately 2.1 million inhabitants.

Geography

Entire Lesotho lies above 1000 m. The lowest point is at 1400 m. and 80% of the country is above 1800m. The climate of Lesotho is moderate and Lesotho has dry winters and warm, wet summers.

Language

The official languages in Lesotho are Southern Sotho and English.

Religion

Over 62% of the population are Christian. Only 9% of the population adhere to the traditional African religions. There is also a small Islamic community.
